This weekend saw another disturbing act of violence on a Black man in our sister state of Minnesota with a police officer killing Daunte Wright during a traffic stop.
Senseless violence from the police against Black and Brown people remains all-too common and wholly unacceptable. Black people should be allowed to leave a traffic stop unscathed. They should be allowed to play music loudly or walk through their own neighborhoods without threat of violence.
It feels like after every one of these shootings, certain subsets of people try to litigate how and why the victim deserved it. These types of reductive equivocations are racist, plain and simple, and the unembellished fact is that the police are not judge, jury, or executioner on Black lives.
Black Lives Matter, and we all need to be striving to make ourselves actively anti-racist. Simply being “non racist” is not enough anymore.
That’s why I want to direct your attention to an organization called the Minnesota Freedom Fund -- a fantastic nonprofit that operates to pay the bail and immigration bonds for those who cannot afford them, because our criminal justice system should never criminalize poverty or put a price on freedom.
