People For Member,
The next big fight to defend a highly qualified woman of color nominee
from the deep-pocketed right-wing smear machine is here. The Far Right has
already begun to unleash dishonest attacks against Kristen Clarke,
President Biden’s STELLAR nominee to head the Justice Department’s Civil
Rights Division.
Clarke – whose Senate Judiciary Committee hearing is this Wednesday –
would be the first ever Black woman to head the Civil Rights Division and
only the second Black person to do so, after former Massachusetts Governor
Deval Patrick who was Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights during
the Clinton administration.
The Right knows how effective Clarke will be at championing Americans’
civil rights and voting rights at the DOJ, so they’re ready to pull out
all the stops to try to sink her nomination.
That’s why we’re making Her Fight Our Fight. And as the first step in our
campaign to defend Clarke and push back against the Right’s attacks, we’ve
just produced an incredibly powerful ad that we're launching this week and
plan to run both on TV and online in Maine, Alaska, and the other states
of key U.S. senators in this fight.
Will you take two minutes help us hit the additional $11,244 we need to
raise before tomorrow to make our ad rollout as impactful as possible?

possible with our ad and get senators’ constituents speaking out to demand
that Clarke is confirmed and civil rights are protected>>
Our new ad – the latest in a series of ads being produced by People For’s
#HerFightOurFight video lab – tells just one of the many stories of
Kristen Clarke’s heroism on behalf of Americans’ rights, in which she took
on a powerful corporation to stop gender discrimination against its women
employees – and won.
People For’s #HerFightOurFight campaign was created to address the urgency
of standing up to the Far Right’s constant attacks against women of color
public officials and nominees. For decades, we’ve seen unsubstantiated
smears and over-the-top rhetoric aimed at women of color that have too
often resulted in Americans being denied wonderful public servants who
were dedicated to fighting on their behalf.
Under President Clinton, Lani Guinier was the first Black woman nominated
to the position that Kristen Clarke is now being considered for … but her
nomination was sunk by a smear campaign that distorted her writings. Other
women of color officials from Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders under Bill
Clinton to Shirley Sherrod, the Georgia Director of Rural Development for
the Department of Agriculture under President Obama, lost their jobs due
to similar smear campaigns.
With President Biden nominating the most diverse executive branch and
judicial nominees ever, as well as his stated commitment to nominating a
Black woman to the Supreme Court, we knew we had to be ready.
And now, with the nomination of Kristen Clarke to head the DOJ’s Civil
Rights Division moving in the Senate, we’re on the verge of perhaps the
biggest fight of this campaign so far.
We’re already organizing grassroots support for Clarke’s confirmation and
planning more ads for her and our other #HerFightOurFight campaign
nominees – including some of President Biden’s judicial nominees and
potential members of his Supreme Court short list.
But we need to be able to run our hard-hitting new ad everywhere we need
to, for as long as we need to. And that’s where you come in.
[ [link removed] ]Please chip in anything you can right now to renew your support for our
work like the #HerFightOurFight campaign and confirm Kristen Clarke>>
Thank you for all you do and for continuing the fight to make sure the Far
Right doesn’t deny the American people the champions they deserve in key
government positions.
Onward,
Ben Jealous, President
