John,

As a woman who survived a violent assault from a boss early in my career, I can't help but see the Senate's inaction on reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) as a sign that protecting women matters less to senators than toxic partisanship.

The original VAWA of 1994 has played a crucial role in addressing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. It funds support groups and battered women houses and shelters, as well as providing grants to states for programs that prevent violence against women or provide services for victims of violence. And since its implementation, we've seen sharp decreases in rates of violence against women.

But VAWA's reauthorization was allowed to expire more than two years ago, and while I applaud the House of Representatives for passing the VAWA reauthorization last month, it has yet to see a vote in the Senate. They just can't seem to come together to pass the reauthorization of what should be a completely nonpartisan bill.

John, we need senators to stand up, do the right thing, and demand a vote to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. Please, join me by adding your name to our petition if you agree.

The women in California's 4th district are business leaders, elected officials, teachers, students, wives, mothers, daughters, and friends. They deserve protection and safeguards that allow them to do their jobs, learn in school, raise their kids, and live their lives without being worried about their safety.

John, that's why this bill must pass without delay. This partisan gridlock is putting millions of women across the nation in harm's way -- something I take very personally.

So please, join me in demanding that Congress pass this critical legislation. It's time.
