Dear John,

The government wants to mark its own homework.

Today, the UK Trade and Business Commission was launched to uncover the real impact of leaving the EU, that the government refuses to acknowledge.

Its launch was atop story in the Financial Times this morning.    <[link removed]>

The government has yet to publish its own economic impact assessment on the UK having left the transition period. The Commission <[link removed]> will expose the real cost, and work towards improving the inadequate trade deal.

Send your MP a message, asking them to improve the barebones trade deal. Call on them to listen to the Commission, work with them, and help deepen our relationship with Europe.

The Commission will take evidence from experts, conduct independent research and engage with business and consumers to analyse all of the UK’s trading arrangements.

The Commission is convened by Peter Norris, Chair of the Virgin Group and Hilary Benn MP, and brings together MPs from across the political spectrum. It will be a truly independent and bipartisan voice.

The government shut down the ‘Brexit Committee’ in January. They rejected parliamentary scrutiny of trade deals in the Trade Bill. They don’t want to be held to account. <[link removed]>

That’s why we need this independent Commission to expose the reality for businesses and communities across the UK.

Send your MP a message, asking them to scrutinise the government’s trade policy and, most importantly, to level-up the EU-UK trade deal.

The government’s threadbare deal is not only devastating businesses and destabilising the economy; it is now threatening the hard-won peace in Northern Ireland. Something needs to change, and soon.

I believe scrutinising the facts, rather than repeating ideology, is what's best for Britain. That is what our Commission is here to do.

Best wishes,

Naomi Smith,
