Republicans in Georgia have launched a full on assault on voting rights.
They just passed sweeping anti-Democratic legislation to overhaul state voting laws. Make no mistake, the bill’s drafters are strategically targeting minority voters by:
- Banning citizens from handing out food or water to voters in long lines, which we know are more common at voting locations in minority communities
- Implementing a new voter ID requirement for mail-in ballots
- Prohibiting mobile polling sites and requiring ballot drop boxes to be inside early voting sites rather than other convenient locations
Here’s why this matters: In the past 3 months, Republicans in 47 states have introduced over 360 bills to make it harder to vote and Alabama is one of them!
The Alabama state legislature is moving forward with bills that would make it harder to vote — this in response to baseless allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 election.
But the truth is these laws won’t make our elections more secure, they will only make it harder for voters to cast their ballots — and they would disproportionately harm communities of color.
The good news is that with my bill, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, which I will be introducing later this year, and H.R. 1, the For the People Act, we can stop these outrageous and anti-Democratic state bills in their tracks.
Will you sign on to our petition standing against these restrictive and racist bills? The integrity of our democracy is at stake:
Our democracy only works when every single voter has the opportunity to cast their ballot.
There’s no way around it: Bills like the ones circulating in state legislatures around the country right now will only serve to undermine the electoral process.
Not on my watch.
Will you add your name to our petition right now to show that you stand WITH democracy and AGAINST voter suppression?
Thanks for standing with me on this important issue,
Terri Sewell
