A multi-billion-dollar plastics plant planned for Louisiana’s St. James Parish along the Mississippi River is coming under fire from SEEC members of Congress and other environmental activists.

Plastics are the next frontier for oil companies to make large profits, and they see Louisiana as a key target for future opportunities.

President Biden has called the area along the Mississippi between Baton Rouge and New Orleans “Cancer Alley” because of the high level of cancer-causing chemicals to which residents of St. James Parish are exposed. One recent analysis suggests the plant, if completed, could triple the cancer-causing chemical levels.

SEEC members of Congress Reps. Raúl Grijalva, chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, and Donald McEachin wrote to President Biden, calling on him to revoke permits for work on the plant to go ahead.

In their letter, they wrote, “Along the 85-mile stretch between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, communities of color are already overburdened with the cumulative impacts of more than 150 petrochemical facilities. With a majority Black and low-income population, St. James Parish alone has 12 refineries within a 10-mile radius.”

A commitment to environmental justice and a plan to address the inequities communities of color experience are a crucial part of the fight against climate change.
