John, on Friday, Maryland became the first state to repeal
the "Police Bill of Rights." From California to New Hampshire, states
across the country are considering bills to eliminate qualified
immunity. In Congress, Ayanna Pressley has sponsored a bill that would
end the doctrine nationwide once and for all.

All of these actions are important steps forward, but let's be clear:
none of this happens without massive pressure from Americans demanding
it.

[ [link removed] ]Whether it happens this year or it takes us multiple years, the fight
is happening now and we won't stop until we win. We need you to join in
today.

John,

Every day across the country, families whose loved ones have been killed,
injured, or traumatized at the hands of law enforcement are denied the
ability to seek legal accountability by 'qualified immunity,' a legal
doctrine invented by the Supreme Court that, in many cases, shields law
enforcement officers from being sued for abuse of power or misconduct.

The wide-ranging use of this doctrine empowers the police to violate
constitutional rights without fear of punishment, perpetuating the cycle
of brutality and murder.

Qualified immunity allows police officers to abuse their power without
fear of accountability. It impedes justice and undermines the rights of
every person in this country.

There can be no justice without accountability, and there can be no
accountability with qualified immunity. That is why I have introduced the
Ending Qualified Immunity Act of 2021.

[ [link removed] ]We can end qualified immunity by enacting the Ending Qualified Immunity
Act of 2021. Sign our petition letting every member of Congress know
there’s a grassroots groundswell of support for this bill.

Qualified immunity remains a major barrier to ending systemic racism and
violence in policing, and it must be eliminated.

In other occupations, there are standards of conduct that must be
followed, and consequences for violating those standards of conduct --
doctors are able to be sued for malpractice, lawyers can be sued for
negligence -- almost every occupation allows for accountability in the
courts.

Police officers should not be treated any differently.

With the public on our side and national focus on racial equity and law
enforcement accountability, this is a moment for bold action.

We must come together to address the systemic racism and violence that
persists in policing today, and ending qualified immunity is one of the
many steps we must take to ensure accountability for abuse of power and
misconduct.
