Now, two years after that traumatic event, we remember every life that was taken away so swiftly, without regard or respect for their humanity.

Today, nine Democratic Presidential candidates will join Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and the organizers of March for Our Lives in Las Vegas to discuss their plans for gun safety, two years after a gunman opened fire on the Las Vegas strip killing 58 people, injuring hundreds and leading to the largest mass shooting in American history.

Now, two years after that traumatic event, we remember every life that was taken away so swiftly, without regard or respect for their humanity. We send our condolences to their families, friends and loved ones who carry their memories with them every day.

But through this immense tragedy, we’ve seen our Las Vegas community reflect the fabric of resilience that is woven into our identity.

When the call came, our first responders sprung into action to protect survivors and to fight for the lives of victims. Alongside them, doctors, nurses and entire hospitals worked tirelessly throughout the night and following days to provide top care for the injured.

It surprised no one that our fellow community members came in droves to do anything they could to help. They donated food, water, blood, blankets and most importantly, did what they could to provide a sense of comfort and safety.

Our lives were forever changed on October 1st, and we will always carry the memory of this tragedy forever. But we also carry the memory of our fight and toughness in the face of trauma. When we needed it most, our community showed the world that #VegasStrong was more than a hashtag. It was what we embodied every day.

With deepest sympathy,
Susie Lee
