Welcome to another edition of FT Now! After another busy week in the news, let’s waste no time diving in! First up, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves blasted President Biden’s massive American Jobs Act on Sunday, warning of major tax hikes if it is passed. Next, Kansas lawmakers voted to rescind the state mask mandate just hours after Democrat Gov. Laura Kelly signed the executive order putting it in place. Finally, Gov. Whitmer is under fire as Michigan now has the most new COVID-19 cases in the country.

Gov. Tate Reeves Blasts Biden’s American Jobs Plan: ‘More Like The Green New Deal Than … An Infrastructure Plan’
What Happened:
In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves predicted that President Biden’s American Jobs Plan would create “significant challenges” for the economy.
Why You Should Care:
Gov. Reeves argued that the $2 trillion bill will lead to significant tax hikes and job losses as the government looks to pay for it. As a result, overall economic growth will decrease as well - not great for a country trying to come out of a global pandemic.
What Happens Next:
President Biden’s American Jobs Plan will face a difficult legislative battle, as Republicans and even moderate Democrat Senator Joe Manchin have expressed strong opposition to its current form.

Kansas lawmakers revoke Democratic governor's mask mandate
What Happened:
Just hours after Democrat Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed an executive order establishing a statewide mask mandate, lawmakers voted to rescind it.
Why You Should Care:
In a statement, Republican leaders in the Kansas House told Gov. Kelly that “public health mandates should be short-term, data-driven, and reserved only for pressing emergency situations.”
What Happens Next:
A growing list of Republican governors share the same view that continued mask mandates are an overreach of emergency authority, and are eliminating them in their states.

Michigan leads US in new COVID cases as Gov. Whitmer takes heat from Republicans
What Happened:
Michigan is now leading the country with the number of COVID-19 cases by population, with more than 452 cases per 100,000 residents. Currently, seven out of the ten cities with the worst outbreaks are in Michigan.
Why You Should Care:
Republicans called out Gov. Whitmer for her poor leadership and destructive policies as Michigan hit this grim milestone. Her strict shutdown orders, controversial nursing home policies, and shady deals have done nothing to improve conditions in the state.
What Happens Next:
Hopefully, COVID-19 cases drop in Michigan as more residents are vaccinated. It is unclear what political consequences Gov. Whitmer will face, but criticism is mounting for the Democrat governor.
