John,
Yesterday, Joe Biden finally made it clear where he stands on Social Security.
“We should be increasing, not decreasing Social Security,” he said at a forum hosted by AARP.1
For Biden, who has come uncomfortably close to calling for benefit cuts in the past, this is a stunning reversal. And it’s only possible because of the sustained pressure of Social Security Works members. Together, we’ve made protecting and expanding Social Security a mainstream position within the Democratic Party.
We’re not going to let up. Every 2020 Presidential Candidate needs to be clear that they will expand Social Security benefits and enact Medicare for All to improve Medicare for seniors!
At the same time that Biden has at long last joined Barack Obama,2 and the rest of the Democratic Party3 in support of expanding―never cutting―Social Security’s modest benefits, he is also scaring seniors by spreading misinformation about Medicare for All.
Biden falsely claimed “Medicare as you know it goes away” under a Medicare for All system. The facts show that Medicare for All would greatly improve the program for current beneficiaries by adding dental, vision, hearing, and long-term care. It will eliminate co-pays and premiums that eat up ⅓ of the average Social Security benefit. And it will lower prescription drug prices, further adding to the savings.
Biden’s comments echo Donald Trump’s false claims that “Medicare for All means Medicare for None.” If Biden wants to win over Democrats, he’s better off sticking to the truth.
We’re going to keep spreading the word about how much Medicare for All can help seniors. We must fight back against Trump’s scaremongering and put pressure on Joe Biden not to engage in cynical, Trump-ish attacks. Can you chip in $5 to stand with us?
Activism works! We’re uniting the voices of our national movement to expand Social Security, enact Medicare for All, and lower prescription drug prices.
Thanks for being on our side.
