John,
How will we ever achieve equal justice under law if the court system itself is unjust?
In the name of so-called "justice" -- things like policing, sentencing, imprisonment, and more -- we've seen everything
but equal justice under law. Because the systems currently in place across the entire country were never meant to benefit Black folks --
just to exploit them.
In the highest court of the land -- the Supreme Court -- this cannot continue to be the case. It's time to expand the Court. To begin to change this broken system.
For the entirety of Trump's presidency, we witnessed the escalating abuse of this unjust system. Most recently, a Republican Senate overwhelmingly confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court in a sham and rushed-through confirmation process. Her inexperience and “originalist” views are steeped in racism, sexism, and homophobia -- and now Black communities across the entire country are in danger of decades of progress for our communities being wiped away.
The Supreme Court's operation has proven to be undemocratic, illegitimate, and corrupt.
We need to expand the court.
That's why we're honored and excited to be a part of the national organizing efforts toward court reform -- and it's important we all get on the same page about this critical campaign.
To do that, please join us on the national organizing call on court reform with the Sunrise Movement, Demand Justice, and Indivisible to learn more about what you can do to show your members of Congress that you support expanding the Supreme Court.
What: National Organizing Call to #ExpandTheCourt
When: Saturday, April 17th at 3pm ET
Where: Virtual Call on Zoom
We're excited to be joined on the call by leading court reform champions in Congress, Senator Ed Markey and Representative Mondaire Jones.
Between divestment from police and investment in Black futures, issues of segregation, affirmative action, immigration, reproductive justice, and so much more, decisions of the Supreme Court directly impact Black communities the hardest -- and it's time that the court expands to serve its democratic obligation to the people.
We need everyone who cares about Black liberation to understand the intersection of our movement with the push to reform the courts. Please join BLMGNF and our partners next Saturday so we can get organized around this critical work.
In love and solidarity,
