It is an exciting time for Metro DC DSA. In the coming month, we will elect a new Steering Committee for the chapter as well as our delegation for the 2021 DSA National Convention. Please read the following email carefully for information about how to participate in these important chapter elections.
Metro DC DSA Steering Committee
Every year the chapter directly elects an eleven person Steering Committee, composed of three directly elected officers (Secretary, Treasurer, and Campaigns Coordinator), and eight at-large members.
Because of the changes to the local bylaws in 2020, this will be an abbreviated Steering term. This Steering Committee will serve until a new committee is elected at the 2021 Local Convention in December.
How do I run for Steering Committee?
According to the chapter’s standing rules you will need to secure five nominations for Steering Committee for your preferred position and be a member of the chapter in good standing. Nominations will be accepted until 11:59 pm on April 21st.
To nominate someone for Metro DC DSA Steering Committee, submit your nomination here. You are allowed to submit as many nominations as you want, but you can not submit multiple nominations for the same nominee. The election will be held following our May General Body Meeting.
2021 DSA National Convention
The 2021 DSA National Convention is coming up in a few short months, and in the meanwhile we must prepare for delegate and NPC elections. More information about running for both delegate and national leadership are below.
What is the National Convention?
DSA’s bi-annual convention is when delegates from around the country come together to vote on our organization’s priorities, debate resolutions, and elect our National Political Committee (NPC). Typically the national convention is held in person, but this year will take place virtually from August 1st to 8th.
You can read more updates from National on the convention here.
What does it mean to be a delegate?
Delegates are the elected representatives of their chapters. Delegates are able to vote on amendments and resolutions, participate in floor debate, and go to trainings at the convention. MDC DSA was apportioned 45 delegates this year and 9 alternates.
If you are a member in good standing (fully paid up and current on dues) you may run. In order to run to be a delegate, you must receive five nominations by April 21st.
To nominate someone for 2021 DSA National Convention delegate, submit your nomination here. You are allowed to submit as many nominations as you want, but you can not submit multiple nominations for the same nominee. The election will be held following our May General Body Meeting, the same ballot as our Steering election. You may run for both Steering Committee and delegate both if you wish.
The convention will also be electing our National Political Committee (NPC). The NPC is the executive board for the national organization between conventions and serves two-year terms. As per the 2021 Convention Rules candidates must receive a nomination by resolution from their chapter in order to be eligible. Fill out this form to apply to run for NPC. Your name will be submitted by resolution to our May General Body Meeting.
Temporary Internal Elections Department
The Steering Committee is also seeking volunteers to help run the Internal Elections Department for this election. This is a temporary body formed to administer the delegate and Steering elections. Members serving on the Internal Elections Department may not run for Steering Committee or chapter delegate. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out this form to apply.
