Throughout this pandemic, millions more people have fallen into poverty. This has dramatically increased the need for food pantries and local soup kitchens as people and families struggle to put food on the table.

Even before the pandemic began, my district―one of the poorest in the country―already struggled to meet our residents’ basic needs. That’s why we frequently highlight local nonprofits that need our support.

With Ramadan beginning next week, we’re highlighting the Muslim Center’s Soup Kitchen in Detroit, which has been providing hot meals to the local community for the past 35 years―for all individuals, regardless of race, religion, or creed.

Can you donate directly to the Muslim Center in Detroit to support their Soup Kitchen and provide hot, nutritious meals to the local community?

Even throughout the pandemic, the Muslim Center has never missed serving a meal to the community. When we reached out to their staff, they told us: “When someone comes to the Muslim Center for assistance, they are in a safe place, with volunteers who serve them with dignity and respect.”

Their Soup Kitchen’s motto is “to serve the people food that we would eat ourselves.” And for the broader Muslim community, the month of Ramadan traditionally involves helping people in need, including through charitable contributions, known as zakāt.
