The ACU Foundation criminal justice reform team has been busy in Tennessee since it became clear that Governor Bill Lee’s criminal justice reform package was being undermined by the Tennessee District Attorneys Association. The same set of reforms last year were passed unanimously. However, after a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee, it became clear that Lee’s proposal was teetering.

|
On Monday, we sent a letter to the state legislature in support of the principles behind Republican Governor Bill Lee’s criminal justice reform package. As we explained: “The core values of conservatism are directly implicated by the failure of any government program, but especially those existing in the criminal justice system.”
On Tuesday, ACUF’s Patrick Plein testified before the Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee. Plein explained: “Wasting taxpayer money on a system that locks too many people up for too long, fails to deliver public safety in return, and breaks up families is not conservative policy - but fixing it is.”
And Wednesday, ACUF’s Nolan Center for Justice Director Emeritus, Pat Nolan, joined a panel with Newt Gingrich and former Texas Governor Rick Perry on justice reform that was moderated by Governor Bill Lee. They discussed how states such as Texas and Georgia have increased community safety, reduced incarceration, and saved taxpayers billions of dollars by enacting reforms similar to those proposed by Governor Lee.

Thank you, Friend, for your constant support of ACU and our efforts.
Will you chip in today to support ACU and CPAC programming?
