Week of Prayer: 25 April – 1 May

“I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” PSALM 91:2

Protecting gospel freedom is a constant battle. Right now, the prospect of a catch-all ‘conversion therapy’ ban is very serious. We need to pray that it will not extend to the ordinary, everyday work of churches – preaching, prayer and pastoral care.

25 April – 1 May

THOSE IN AUTHORITY
The authorities that exist have been established by God (Romans 13:1). They are God’s servants (v6). We should pray for them.
Pray first “for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 TIMOTHY 2:2
Please pray:
* For wisdom for the Queen, Prime Minister and all those in national and local government;
* That Parliament will promote what is good and restrain evil;
* For believers working in politics, the civil service and the judiciary to act as salt and light;
* For God to raise up more leaders in our national life who follow Christ.

SOCIETY
There is constant pressure to move away from God’s good instructions for his world.
“Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” JEREMIAH 29:7
Please pray:
* For the CI, as we seek to bring Christian influence to secular society;
* For the country as we recover from Covid-19;
* That recreational drug use will not be decriminalised;
* That the Government’s review of gambling regulations will lead to tighter regulation;
* For evangelicals to be portrayed fairly in mainstream media.
Tuesday

SECULAR HUMANISM
Our nation has been blessed because of the impact of Christian values in education, healthcare, justice – in fact all areas of society.
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” ROMANS 12:2
Please pray:
* That attempts by secular humanists to marginalise Christianity in the public sphere will not succeed;
* For Wales, where the Government has replaced Religious Education with a new subject which includes the compulsory teaching of secular humanism;
* That what has happened in Wales will not spread to the rest of the UK.

FREE SPEECH
Free speech risks being undermined by the illiberal idea that everyone has the right not to be offended.
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 PETER 3:15
Please pray:
* Giving thanks for the freedom to disagree with same-sex relationships and transgender ideology. Pray it continues to be protected;
* That the Law Commission will uphold free speech as it considers how to tackle so-called hate speech;
* For the police, as they uphold good laws on free speech, including the freedom to share the Gospel publicly.
Thursday
------
SANCTITY OF LIFE
Last year, abortion was once again responsible for the most deaths worldwide.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14
Please pray:
* That temporary rules allowing unsupervised abortions will be dropped;
* With gratitude that assisted suicide is still illegal. Pray it remains so;
* With thanksgiving that the blanket use of Do Not Resuscitate orders has been exposed;
* That a Bill to end abortion on the ground of disability in Northern Ireland will succeed.
Friday
------
CHILDREN
Today’s children are being bombarded with inappropriate images and ideas.
“...Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them” MATTHEW 19:14
Please pray:
* Giving thanks for the recent High Court ruling protecting children from ‘sex-swap’ hormones. Pray it will be upheld at the appeal in June;
* That schools will respect parents’ responsibility to protect children from inappropriate sex education and harmful transgender ideology;
* That the Government will keep its commitment to tighten abuse of trust laws and better protect children from sexual abuse.

GOSPEL FREEDOM
The Gospel is good news. Christians should not be hindered from making it known to anyone.
“Pray…that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains.” EPHESIANS 6:19-20
Please pray:
* That plans to ban so-called conversion therapy will not outlaw the ordinary work of churches;
* For our legal team in their work helping those in difficulty for their Christian beliefs;
* For Kenneth Ferguson, sacked for his beliefs on biblical marriage. His case against the Robertson Trust resumes on 10 May; pray it will be successful;
* That God in his mercy would grant repentance and revival in the UK.
