** Spring is in the air!
------------------------------------------------------------

As the flowers start blooming and the weather warms, we're thinking about refresh and renewal and all the things 2021 will bring. As we plan for phase one of reopening, here's a look at what we've been up to across our many programs and what to look forward to in the coming year.

** Girl Action Teams
------------------------------------------------------------
Our hybrid Girl Action Teams have been working towards the completion of their social justice projects. Each team is tackling a different project and/or issue with their coaches and peers.

VMFA Girl Action Team

Our VMFA Girl Action Team has been digging into the roots and soul of Southern Black culture with Coach Nickey and special guests. From music to hairstyles and belief systems they are having a great time exploring our history! They are currently working on an exhibit that will be a part of the VMFA’s Dirty South exhibit ([link removed]) , which opens May 22. As part of the exhibit, the girls are working on a piece that celebrates Southern culture and brings awareness to changing the perceptions of the South.
Huguenot High School Girl Action Team
Our Huguenot Girl Action Team is writing a podcast episode for the "Now Upon A Child" Podcast. The girls are weaving their own experiences in school into a narrative that shares the Black experience but in the style of a fairytale. These stories are meant to flip the script on the age-old fairytales and bring a modern twist that sparks change.

They also continue to work with the Department of Education to share their experiences and thoughts on harsh dress codes and disciplinary actions in Richmond schools.

JrNBA Girl Action Team

Our JrNBA Girl Action Team ([link removed]) is exploring gender bias in sports while also learning about the many career opportunities available in the field. Each week, they hear from women who work and play in sports, get moving with fun activities, and explore social justice issues related to the sports industry. They are working on a campaign around equality for female athletes and women who work in sports that they will present to the JrNBA. Registration is still open for this hybrid team. Learn more ([link removed]) .

Petersburg Girl Action Team
Petersburg High School participants are hard at work discovering and exploring the ins and outs of the fashion industry while taking a closer look at what it really means for diversity and inclusion in the space.

** Girls Who Code
------------------------------------------------------------

Our 2020/2021 Girls Who Code cohort, led by Akela Silkman, finished up their session last month with some impressive beat creation. They learn computer engineering skills through a cool tool called Sketchup.

We are excited to announce that our newest Girls Who Code cohort will be joining the "Engineer for the Week" Facebook community! That means that Girls Who Code Spring participants will get to work on a fun, sprint-like project with the team at Facebook building games!

** Girl Ambassador Program
------------------------------------------------------------

This February we welcomed 28 girls to the Girl Ambassador Program. So far, they have worked on Storytelling, website creation, and are diving into entrepreneurship with the team at Microsoft. To announce the launch of the program this year, our Brand Ambassador, Iyanna Hardin, coordinated with current and past GAP participants to create this fun, TikTok video. Check it out and be sure to follow us on TikTok ([link removed]) !

We are currently searching for hiring partners to support our girls with internship opportunities from July 5th - August 9th. Want to learn more? Join us for our upcoming information session! RSVP here ([link removed])

** Immersion Lab
------------------------------------------------------------
Our Immersion Lab participants have been learning from some incredible women leaders and entrepreneurs. We’ve dug into storytelling, learned to make websites with MAXX Potential, got creative in a series by the Martin Agency, we heard from Howard University Graduate and winner of Target's inaugural HBCU Design Challenge, Isaiah Timmons, learned about preparing for college with Howard B.E.S.T., and Target's Heart and Hand team shared some tips for creating the perfect space.

This month we will be joined by Microsoft again for a MakeCode series that brings computer science to life with fun projects and immediate results. We will also learn more about the college admissions process with Virginia Commonwealth University representative, Shivani Singh. The Immersion is a monthly membership ($25/month) or $15 per class for nonmembers. Learn more here ([link removed]) .
