John, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Sexual assault in America is all too common. 1 in 5 women will experience sexual assault in their lifetimes. Most victims of rape (both male and female) face these traumatic experiences before they’re 25 years old. And-- nearly 80% of rapes and sexual assaults go unreported.

We must increase awareness and do more to create a strong support system for survivors -- and pass legislation that will help prevent these despicable sexual attacks.

In Oregon, working with statewide advocates, activists, and leaders, we created the Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Task Force (SATF) in 1999 — and since then, my office has played a major role in the coalition's efforts to address sexual violence. (You can read more about the Oregon SATF here).

Throughout my time as AG, I've been a staunch advocate for victims and survivors, as well as prevention of sexual assault. I championed bills that doubled the statute of limitations on rape charges from six to 12 years, strengthened confidentiality laws for survivors, and outlawed "revenge porn." I testified in favor of our law that takes guns out of the hands of convicted domestic abusers and those who are subject to restraining orders.

As a country, we need to create an environment where survivors feel comfortable reporting their attacks with the confidence that they will be both believed and protected. And, with the help of my Crime Victims and Survivors Services Division, I will continue fighting to expand services for victims and survivors across Oregon.

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we can make an impact together by lifting up survivors and their stories, educating ourselves, and raising awareness of the fight to end sexual violence.

Thanks for your support,
Ellen
