Alexandria launched the Homework Helpers tutoring program in New York City after the largest public school system in the nation closed down late last year due to COVID-19. Now, thousands of students are still remote learning.
The program was quickly embraced by communities across New York’s 14th district, and it’s grown into a network of dedicated volunteer tutors who saw that Homework Helpers was changing lives, and they wanted to be part of it.
We never expected to get 13,000 volunteers signed up in the first few days, let alone have 1,000 actively tutoring today. So, now we’re excited to be in the position to expand the program to include virtual extracurricular activities!
In order to keep up with the demand for programming, and fund the expansion into extracurricular activities, we need support from our grassroots donors today.

We did our first extracurricular programming last week — bringing our students a virtual cooking class. And, we plan to expand virtual activities to include courses in early literacy, readers theater, and computer coding.
We’ve heard from so many parents about how much our Homework Helpers program has helped ease the anxiety of balancing working full-time at home and childcare.
The Homework Helpers program is on track to reach our goal of connecting 1,000 students to the program by the end of June. But to reach that goal, we need your help now.
Homework Helpers is the epitome of what our politics should be about: helping people.
