John,

The need for us to take action to protect our democracy could not be more urgent. In 2021 alone, lawmakers in 47 states across the country are pushing legislation designed to further restrict voting and disenfranchise voters. Over the past four years, we have seen how fragile our electoral system can be, with efforts made to erode faith, trust, and fairness in our democracy.

So we’re writing to you today to make sure you have all the information you need to join us in the important work of protecting our democracy. Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be breaking down legislation and giving you ways to take action and make an impact. Up first, the For the People Act. Read on to get in-depth info about what the bill means and why its passage is so urgent >>

What is the For the People Act?
Also known as H.R.1 in the House and S.1 in the Senate, the For the People Act would expand voting rights for all and create a democracy that demands integrity, fairness, and transparency in every election across the country.

What exactly would the For the People Act do?
The For the People Act is extremely comprehensive and includes several reforms that are urgently needed to ensure free and fair elections for all -- but here are some of the highlights.

The For the People Act would:

Institute automatic voter registration
Modernize voter registration systems
Expand early voting requirements
Allow universal access to vote by mail
Restore the right to vote for people with felony convictions
End partisan gerrymandering

What is the urgency around passing the For the People Act now?
Over 361 bills restricting voting have been introduced this year -- but it didn’t start in 2021. For far too long, voter suppression has been a shameful reality in our country. The ability for everyone to meaningfully participate in our democracy and the need for legislative action is urgent.

This historic legislation responds to two crises facing our country: the sustained attack on democracy, culminating in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, and the urgent demand for racial justice.

It is based on the key insight that the best way to defend democracy is to strengthen democracy. If enacted, it would be the most significant voting rights and democracy reform in more than half a century.

Who supports the For the People Act?
The majority of voters, both Democrats and Republicans, support the For the People Act.

What can I do to help this legislation pass?
