The atmosphere was incredible yesterday at the White House as President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Attorney General Garland addressed our epidemic of gun violence and unveiled a series of executive orders aimed at curbing the number of gun violence deaths and injuries each year.

The series of orders range from stopping the proliferation of untraceable “ghost guns”, to increasing the funding to interrupt the violence in communities that drive gun homicides, to strengthening the work of the ATF in our fight against gun violence.

But one provision especially caught my attention.

The Justice Department, within 60 days, will publish model Extreme Risk Protection (ERPO) legislation for the development, passage, and implementation in states.

In the months following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a shaken nation was asking itself what could be done to stop such a horrific tragedy from ever happening again.

CSGV wanted more than a guess, more than “thoughts and prayers” — we wanted evidence-informed solutions to these questions. In 2013, we brought together the group of experts and academics for a consortium that developed the modern Extreme Risk Protection Order policy. CSGV has been instrumental in the development, passage, and implementation of these laws, now saving lives in 19 states and the District of Columbia.

The president’s leadership is a phenomenal first step — but we need your help to do more.

Receiving this commitment from the White House is an incredible achievement but in order to get these life-saving policies in more states, we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work at the ground level.

Our Safer States Initiative equips gun violence prevention leaders in states and communities across the country with the financial resources, policy expertise and capacity they need to create change. This initiative puts resources directly into the hands of local leaders who can assist those most impacted by gun violence in their communities.

Building partnerships and investing in our local gun violence prevention community groups and leaders. That is what drives real change. That is the work that will save American lives.
