This email is a little different than usual, John.

Since launching Defend the Senate back in February, we’ve been committed to one central goal: maintaining and expanding Democratic control in the United States Senate.

We wanted to take a moment to pull back the curtain and dive into our efforts for the 2022 midterm elections. But first, please click here to make a contribution of any amount to help protect our Senate majority.

Early investments online and on the ground in swing states are going to determine if we win or lose our majority. Mitch McConnell and the GOP recognize that, and that’s why they’ve already ramped up their efforts.

We’re working hard to fight back against the Republican megadonor network and right-wing attacks coming our way, and our strategy is threefold:

First, we must protect vulnerable Democratic Senators up for reelection. The current Senate makeup is 50-50. If we lose even one of our incumbents, Mitch McConnell and the Republican Party will take control of the Senate again.

That’s why we started Defend the Senate — to raise the necessary funds to protect our incumbent Democratic Senators:

  • Michael Bennet in Colorado
  • Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada
  • Tammy Duckworth in Illinois
  • Maggie Hassan in New Hampshire
  • Mark Kelly in Arizona
  • Raphael Warnock in Georgia

Next, we’re keeping a close eye on open races where Republicans have announced their retirements. There are five seats that provide Democrats with an incredible opportunity to strengthen our majority — or make up for any seats we may lose next year. These retiring Republicans include:

  • Roy Blunt in Missouri
  • Richard Burr in North Carolina
  • Rob Portman in Ohio
  • Richard Shelby in Alabama
  • Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania

Finally, we’re looking for opportunities to defeat vulnerable Republicans in battleground states. We have a chance to flip seats held by GOP Senators like Chuck Grassley in Iowa, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and Marco Rubio in Florida.

Election Day for the midterms may feel far away, but the Republican Party has already started making significant investments in fundraising, candidate recruitment, and voter outreach.

They’ve even started to target Democratic incumbents like Catherine Cortez Masto and Raphael Warnock with negative ads online.

If we don’t have the necessary resources to execute this plan, we’ll have to make tough choices that could leave some Democrats exposed and cost us our majority. So we’re coming to you directly, John:

Please make a contribution to Defend the Senate to help power our work in battleground states across the country. The GOP fundraising machine isn’t slowing down and we can’t afford to either:

It’s a big undertaking, but our work is vital to maintaining our Senate majority.

Thanks,

Defend the Senate

P.S. Without the millions you helped raise last cycle, there’s no way Democrats could have flipped the Senate and passed a $1.9 trillion stimulus package, sending economic relief to millions of American families in need. Thank you.
