Friend, have you heard what’s happening in Myanmar? A military takeover and escalating violence have caused catastrophic consequences for children. Children's rights and their lives are in danger. Here’s the latest:
Following the takeover in early February, Myanmar’s military has killed hundreds of citizens, including children. Peaceful protests have been met with bullets and children have been executed in their own homes. Since the coup, at least 46 children have been killed by military forces, countless others injured and millions exposed to brutal violence.
In addition to the ongoing conflict, hundreds of thousands of children and their families have been forced to flee the country due to previous military violence. Refugees like the Rohingya live in overcrowded and dangerous camps. Now with Myanmar in chaos, more children are at risk of becoming refugees. Nearly 1 million children are without access to vaccines, 12 million risk losing another year of learning and every day more children live in fear of the violence around them.
Situations like this aren’t limited to Myanmar. Conflict has become a prominent driver of the global refugee crisis that’s disrupted the lives of millions of children. UNICEF is providing emergency supplies and lifesaving care to help refugee children globally, including Rohingya refugees who fled violence in Myanmar.
