John,
An environmental disaster is underway in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

On the island of St. Croix, an oil refinery pumped a mix of oil and water into the air, raining down onto the local community. Gardens, rooftops, rainwater tanks, and cisterns were all polluted. Dozens of tarballs washed up on the shore of the Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge.

The disaster could have been avoided.

In the last seven weeks of the Trump administration, the Environmental Protection Agency rushed through permits allowing the Limetree Bay refinery to reopen after being shut down for nearly a decade after facing multiple lawsuits alleging severe environmental violations.

While the Biden administration has withdrawn an essential permit for the refinery, which will lead to tighter pollution controls, the refinery, for now, is still operating. The EPA is reassessing what measures are required to safeguard local communities’ health in the Virgin Islands.

John, this is another example of the mess Trump left in his wake, and it will be a critical test for the Biden administration and its commitment to environmental justice.

SEEC members will be working with the EPA to advance policies that protect communities and avoid environmental devastation like this in the future.

As SEEC members work with the Biden administration to revoke environmentally dangerous policies rolled out by the Trump EPA, it’s clear we need to elect more like-minded members of Congress who will join in this fight for environmental justice.
