When I was a kid, the company my dad worked for was sold. He lost his job
and my family was eventually forced onto public assistance. My brother and
I relied on reduced-price meals at our public school and we used food
stamps to put dinner on the table — until they ran out. It was tough, and
we probably wouldn’t have made it through without government support.

All these experiences shaped the person -- and legislator -- I am today.
