“I knew those were people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement, would never do anything to break the law, and so I wasn't concerned … had the tables been turned, and President Trump won the election and those were tens of thousands of Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters, I might have been a little concerned.”
That's what Ron Johnson, one of Trump's most loyal supporters, had to say about the Capitol rioters.
And now, three months later, Johnson is still making racist comments and spreading conspiracy theories to stay in Trump's good graces. He's even claimed that the rioters were harmless because of their “jovial, friendly demeanor!”
Senators like Ron Johnson, who blatantly spread hate and white supremacist conspiracies, have no place in the U.S. Senate. And we have the chance to vote him and other dangerous Republicans out next year and replace them with diverse Democrats.
We can defeat Ron Johnson and his allies -- but at a time when Republicans are still pulling massive fundraising numbers by pledging loyalty to Trump, it's going to take a lot of grassroots energy.
