Friend –

There's no mistaking that our civil liberties are up against a lot right now. A coordinated effort to erase trans rights, abortion rights, and the right to vote has escalated in state legislatures across the country.

And in this urgent moment, defending everyone's rights must happen on all fronts. That's why we cannot stress the importance of our ACLU affiliates enough – on the ground working in all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Here's just a snapshot of the latest litigation and advocacy efforts from our affiliate teams – across the country and across the issues – that you should know about:

In LGBTQ rights – amid a slew of anti-transgender bills in state legislatures – the ACLU of Arkansas and the ACLU are now preparing a lawsuit against HB 1570, a cruel and extreme bill that bans gender-affirming and life-saving health care for trans youth. This comes after the Arkansas legislature overrode the governor's veto of the bill this week – and after nationwide advocacy efforts, including from ACLU supporters like you, mobilized to block it. No matter what, we will continue to fight relentlessly for trans youth in this state and every state where rights are under attack.

As similar state-level efforts against abortion access continue to intensify, so does our reproductive freedom work. Earlier this week, a judge blocked enforcement of a law that requires tissue from an abortion be buried or cremated – a temporary victory in our lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Ohio, the ACLU, and Planned Parenthood. Had the law been allowed to go into effect this week, it would've interrupted critical abortion services across the entire state.

And with voting rights facing equally severe attacks, the ACLU of Georgia – along with the ACLU, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., Southern Poverty Law Center, and law firms WilmerHale and Davis Wright Tremaine – filed a federal lawsuit last week against a sweeping new voter restriction bill in Georgia that makes it harder for people to vote, particularly voters of color, new citizens, and religious communities.

Meanwhile, as a result of its litigation work in immigrants' rights, the ACLU of Michigan recently released a 50-page groundbreaking report that exposes how Border Patrol, an agency within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, uses racial profiling and local and state police to target immigrants from Latin America and other people of color throughout the state.

Finally, in criminal justice this week, the ACLU of Massachusetts and the ACLU filed a lawsuit calling for an investigation into Springfield, Massachusetts police violence and misconduct, and for the Hampden County District Attorney's Office's failure to fully disclose these abuses.
