I’m Mugdha, an abortion provider in training and board member at URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity. When I was an undergrad at the University of Alabama, I often found myself confused. Between pre-med classes and conversations with my friends in social justice circles, I wondered why my studies felt so disconnected from the conversations I was having in the student center. When a mentor saw me struggling, they encouraged me to join URGE’s Alabama Reproductive Health Leadership Institute (RJLI). There, I learned about Reproductive Justice: the right to bodily autonomy, to have children or not, and to live in safe, sustainable communities.



Through this lens, I saw that medicine and social justice were connected through abortion care and I was inspired to start a chapter at my school to change the conversion around abortion. Not long after, our campus hosted URGE’s Abortion Positive Tour.

I’ve been proud to be part of the Abortion Positive Tour because I believe that abortion should be accessible to everyone no matter where they live or how much money they have. Unfortunately, in Alabama and many other states, anti-abortion politicians have passed laws making it nearly impossible to get an abortion. People of color, people with low incomes, and LGBTQIA+ folks bear the brunt of these devastating restrictions, meanwhile, patients and providers are shamed and punished. <[link removed]>



A few days ago, URGE’s Abortion Positive Tour kicked off on social media. In the past four days, hundreds of young people like me signed a pledge to remove the personal stigma associated with abortion and demand that the Biden-Harris Administration remove the barriers that stand in the way of young people's access to medication abortion.
