FRIDAY APRIL 9TH, 2021

We are the corporate foundation of Thomson Reuters, the global news and information services company. We work to advance media freedom, foster more inclusive economies, and promote human rights. Through news, media development, free legal assistance and convening initiatives, we combine our unique media and legal services to drive systemic change.

Welcome to the Thomson Reuters Foundation's new and improved newsletter! Each month, we’ll be sharing highlights from across all our work and letting you know how you can get involved.

This month, our ‘Livelihoods in Limbo’ series offers a visual exploration of the impact of the pandemic on people’s lives and work in Bolivia, Bangladesh and India, and a newly-released research report facilitated by TrustLaw offers a comparative legal analysis of refugee entrepreneurship, business ownership, and the right to work in host communities. We also share other highlights from our work across our three focus areas.

Livelihoods in Limbo: Photo essays from Bolivia, Bangladesh and India

We launched a photo competition called 'COVID19: The Bigger Picture' in partnership with Omidyar Network last year to spotlight the human impact of the pandemic. From hundreds of powerful entries from all over the world, our judging panel picked three winners.

As part of the prize, each winner partnered with the Thomson Reuters Foundation news team to develop and produce exclusive photo essays highlighting the impact of COVID-19 on livelihoods in their country. Entitled 'Livelihoods in Limbo', it explores the impact of the pandemic on people's jobs in Bolivia, India and Bangladesh.

How can access to entrepreneurship play a role in ending the global refugee crisis?

TrustLaw, our global pro bono service, facilitated a new report led by the Tent Partnership for Refugees entitled ‘Refugee entrepreneurship, business ownership, and the right to work in host communities: a legal comparative analysis’. The report, with contributions by Latham & Watkins, Ozalp Law Firm, Winston & Strawn LLP, and partners, covers laws applicable to refugees’ right to work and establish a business in eight countries globally.

Noni Rossini, Head of Marketing and Communications at the Tent Partnership for Refugees, said: "Refugee entrepreneurship is important and worth supporting – but it’s often opaque as to what’s legally permitted in host countries. That creates a tremendous challenge for companies looking to work with refugee entrepreneurs, and that’s the gap that the report fills."

Media Freedom:

France: Freedom of expression in decline. Using legal research facilitated by TrustLaw, our global pro bono service, Article 19 released a statement expressing concerns around the French Global Security Bill, which aims to curtail media freedom and freedom of expression in the name of national security. TrustLaw connected Article 19 with lawyers in Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain to analyse the legal frameworks applicable to freedom of expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press in order to identify any laws that might aim to curtail these freedoms in the name of protecting national security forces.

‘Reporting on Immunisation and Vaccination’ journalism training with Sabin Vaccine Institute. With news about coronavirus vaccines dominating headlines and misinformation spreading around the world, we partnered with the Sabin Vaccine Institute to launch an eight-day ‘Reporting on Immunisation and Vaccination’ programme for journalists in Eastern Europe. The online programme covered a wide range of topics – from the role of vaccines in public health, to new and emerging issues around COVID-19 vaccines, to the responsibility of the media in educating the public about vaccine and immunisation related misinformation.

Inclusive Economies:

Net zero: the climate pledge, explained. There’s been a huge rise in pledges to reach net zero carbon emissions, from countries like China and America to companies like Shell and IKEA. But what does it actually mean? How do carbon offsets work? And how will it all help in the fight against climate change? Watch our YouTube explainer to find out.

Uber minimum wage ruling: what it means to a struggling driver. Our reporter spoke to an Uber driver in London following the minimum wage ruling at the UK Supreme Court in March. “It's good news that they've admitted we're all workers. That's a step in the right direction, but they're not complying with the full ruling,” said Zamir Dreni, an Uber driver in London.

Human Rights:

Xinjiang to London: Chinese surveillance tech in the UK. Over half of London’s councils have bought surveillance tech made by Chinese companies Hikvision and Dahua, both of which have been linked to Uighur persecution in Xinjiang province. Our news team went hunting for some of their cameras in London. Watch our latest YouTube video to find out more.

Fair and Equal Treatment of Women as Professional Athletes. As part of our International Women's Day campaign, we showcased our ‘Women in Sport’ legal research, facilitated by TrustLaw, which compares the laws and regulations concerning the legal recognition of female professional athletes in Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Peru and the United Kingdom. Watch our social video to hear from professional athletes calling for laws that help to protect women and girls against wage inequality, gender violence and a lack of funding across sport.
