John,
3,058 days ago I received a call that my son, Jordan, had been murdered.
He was 17 years old. Shot and killed by a man who claimed his music was too loud.
I cried. I prayed. I picked up the pieces of my life and began to fight for justice for my son — my best friend.
For six years, I spoke out demanding our leaders in Washington take action to end the gun violence epidemic that shattered my life and the lives of countless others.
And when Republicans refused to act, I stepped up to run myself. I was a mom on a mission, and I would not let my son down.
The NRA tried to stop me. They spent millions of dollars demeaning our movement. But we won, and I became the first Black woman to hold this seat.
I carry Jordan’s memory with me every time I speak up for gun safety. He was with me when we passed H.R. 8, our universal background checks bill.
He was with me today as I sat in the Rose Garden of the White House while our President took decisive action to keep our families safe.
And Jordan was with me a few moments ago, when I re-introduced my Red Flag bill in the House to keep guns out of the wrong hands.
Today I have more faith than ever that we will win this fight. For Jordan. And for every precious life that was cut short from gun violence.
Thank you for being a part of this, John.
My best,
Lucy McBath
