John,
I was born and raised in North Carolina, spending many summers playing school with my friends. We gave mock spelling tests to our siblings and stayed up on the phone teaching each other algebra. It was no surprise when I returned to my hometown in 2009 to teach high school.
By 2014, the Republicans’ assault on our schools had begun to take its toll. We used tattered textbooks and we all took on extra duties and second jobs just to make ends meet. Despite the challenges, I found joy and purpose in facilitating a love of learning. Ultimately, I made a difficult decision to leave teaching, vowing to work for new leadership that valued my colleagues and the students struggling without adequate funding.
This past weekend on the campaign trail, we had the opportunity to run into one of my former students, Staisha. Staisha is a graduating college senior, majoring in political science, and serves in leadership roles in a number of civic organizations. I am so proud of her and seeing her made me remember all over again why I’m in this fight.
I am honored to work to elect Rep. Chaz Beasley as our next Lt. Governor. Chaz grew up in poverty and personally understands the transformative power of education. It was his teachers who believed in him and pushed him to be top of his class. He talks to many of his teachers still, and calls on them for advice often.
Chaz and I both know that education is critical in building a state where every single North Carolinian can be successful.
Your contribution today will support Rep. Beasley as he continues to fight for the teachers and students of North Carolina. Can we count on you to chip in today?
Thank you,
Caroline Spencer
