President Biden's executive actions to address the gun violence epidemic are a great first step, but we still need action from Congress. Will you add your name to say you support Senator Murphy's efforts to pass a bipartisan background checks bill in the Senate?

Friends -

Earlier today, I went to the White House as President Biden rolled out a series of Executive Actions and his nominee for the director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

I honestly wasn't sure I'd be able to make it given my leg is bandaged from my orthopedic surgery yesterday. But surgery recovery be damned. After an hour of figuring out how to put pants, socks and shoes over the bandages, I made my way to the White House. I knew this was an historic moment, and I couldn't miss it.

Some of the actions announced today will push states and Congress to pass new laws to keep us safe through model legislation and research. Biden also took direct actions to close loopholes on technologies that gun manufacturers use to avoid regulation -- such as devices that effectively turn pistols into short-barreled shotguns or rifles.

And President Biden has directed the Department of Justice to create a new rule to reduce the proliferation of "ghost guns" -- essentially homemade guns that are assembled by buying the parts separately online. Under this rule, purchases of ghost guns will require background checks. It is a no-brainer, and the right move by President Biden.

But the truth is, there is no Executive Action that can fully address the scale of this crisis. Without congressional action, a quarter of all gun transfers will continue to happen without a check.

That's why I'm working right now to craft bipartisan legislation to expand background checks in the Senate that can pass and that Joe Biden can sign.

I need your help to keep the pressure on my colleagues. Today's actions are not a free pass for congressional inaction, but instead, it should be the push for us to do more. Can you make your voice heard on this?

Add your name to tell the Senate that we must pass a comprehensive background checks bill. Only Congress can close the gaping loopholes in our background checks system, and my colleagues need to know that the American people are demanding action.

Background checks are supported by more than 90% of Americans. That does not happen without the support of the overwhelming majority of Republicans, conservatives, and gun owners. I believe we can and must get this done.

Victims of gun violence have long waited for action, and my hope for them is that today provides some solace and a step toward justice. But my promise is that this is just the start. We will keep fighting.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
