While I was serving in Afghanistan, I worked as a bomb disposal expert, clearing safe paths for my fellow soldiers pushing into Taliban territory. The last bomb that I discovered exploded beneath me, causing the loss of both of my legs and my left index finger. All that I have ever wanted to do was serve my country—first on the battlefield for the U.S. Armed Forces, and once my injury made that impossible, on a different kind of battlefield in the heart of the swamp.
