Dear John,
Keeping track of all the voting-related measures at the federal and state levels is a difficult task, but the Verified Voting team is hard at work. Here are just a few of the important actions we’re engaged in to ensure that voters can have justified confidence their votes will be counted as cast in future elections:
✔️ FEDERAL
We’re part of a broad effort to support the measures in HR1/S1, the For the People Act, that would strengthen confidence in our election results - including making grants available for states to conduct risk-limiting audits, investing in election infrastructure, and requiring the use of voter-verified paper ballots in future federal elections. To learn more about the bill, join a virtual teach-in sponsored by the Declaration for American Democracy, Verified Voting, Common Cause, the Brennan Center, and Public Citizen today at 4:00pm EST / 1:00pm PST by registering here.
✔️ ARIZONA
We are working alongside voting rights advocates to push back against the Arizona Senate’s decision to hire a partisan firm to audit the ballots, voting records, computer systems, and data from Maricopa County in the 2020 election. Rather than “bring integrity” to the election results, an audit conducted without adhering to best practices will only sow doubt in the certified results.
✔️ TEXAS
As the most recent Verifier statistics show, 20.4% of Texas voters are projected to vote on machines that have no paper trail in 2022 -- unless counties with “paperless” voting systems can replace them. We’re testifying in the Texas state legislature and providing educational material to local officials on the nuts and bolts of voter-verifiable paper ballots and records, as well as risk-limiting audits to check them.
✔️ COLORADO
We’re voicing our concerns about the introduction of a bill that would allow Colorado voters with disabilities to return a ballot electronically. A majority of cybersecurity experts warn that internet voting - which includes returning a voted ballot electronically - is dangerously risky for our democracy. Every voter deserves to know that their vote counts, and there are better options available that give voters with disabilities a safe, secure, private, and accessible way to vote without resorting to insecure technologies. We’re closely monitoring this bill and continuing to speak out about the risks.
✔️ OTHER STATES
As more and more states like Maryland, Maine, and Connecticut give serious consideration to more robust, transparent auditing processes like risk-limiting audits, we’re testifying and providing written comments in support. And in Louisiana, the lone state still using entirely paperless voting technology, we’re advising election officials on improving their voting systems.
In short, the 2020 elections may be over, but the election landscape continues to evolve rapidly. The decisions elected officials make in the years between major elections have a significant impact on our democracy and how we vote in this country. Please consider a one-time or sustaining contribution to our education and outreach efforts as we continue to push back against anti-voter bills and ensure that every voter can trust that their vote counts.
With thanks,
The Verified Voting Team
