Dear ,
Today, we’re rolling out our most ambitious policy yet: a comprehensive vision for Green Jobs, Green Food, Green Justice. This plan will prioritize addressing injustices in our natural and social environments to create a new Green NYC, and we’re very excited about it!
The truth is, NYC is in a unique position to be a transformative leader in addressing injustices in our natural environment — particularly when it comes to climate and food cultivation and access. But we also have to address the injustices to the social environments of poor Black and Brown communities who have been disproportionately punished for the possession of cannabis. Just because the state has legalized cannabis doesn’t mean our work is over.
We worked with organizers, academics, practitioners and activists to design policies centered on the interconnectedness of our urban ecology with environmental systems, city planning, social justice, mobility, health and well-being, political institutions and the built environment. We can’t afford not to recognize how all of these areas are tied together — our planet and our people depend on it.
That means drawing on our ingenuity and labor through green jobs to provide socially just employment; fighting poverty and expanding access to nutrition; ensure those most impacted by the legal system aren’t prevented from thriving within the cannabis industry; establishing a public bank; address the long-standing environmental harms that have pushed our city to a breaking point; and so much more.
