As the mayor of San Diego, Kevin Faulconer made keeping our streets and communities safe a top priority.
Now he’s ready to take the same level-headed approach to all of California as our next governor.
The issue of public safety should NOT be inflammatory talking points that are designed to fire up whatever side of the political argument you’re on. Instead, we must come together to support reasonable initiatives that keep everyone safe.
Kevin was on the cutting edge of police and community partnership in San Diego. He knows these solutions can work for our entire state too.
Here are just a few of the things that Kevin Faulconer accomplished as the mayor of San Diego:
- Instead of defunding the police, he made sure they had the tools they needed to do their jobs properly and effectively.
- Adopted the use of body cameras to increase trust and accountability —one of the first big cities in the country to do this.
- Reached a landmark agreement to make our salaries more competitive and retain good officers. Today, we’re at a 10-year high in terms of police staffing.
- Led the state by banning the use of carotid restraint: The SDPD was first in the region to do so, and now it’s statewide law.
- Introduced stand-alone de-escalation and duty to intervene policies to ensure officers are following policies and procedures under strict penalty.
Thanks to these changes, San Diego is one of the safest major cities in all of California!
Other cities across California caved to demands to cut police budgets, and now many are reversing course after seeing the disastrous effects of doing so.
Defunding the police is not the answer, it's a failed experiment. The real answer is better-funded and properly-trained police officers.
We need to foster positive relationships between the police and the communities they serve. Kevin was able to do that in San Diego, and now he needs your help to bring that mindset to the state level.
