Abortion Stigma Has Consequences

Friend,

Have you ever noticed how politicians, even progressive ones, almost never say the word “abortion” when they talk about reproductive rights? This is because abortion is still heavily stigmatized. And that’s a big problem. Anti-abortion lawmakers count on people to shy away from talking about abortion so they can pass abortion bans and restrictions without a fuss.

We can fight abortion stigma by embracing peoples’ decision to have an abortion. We can fight abortion stigma by saying the word “abortion” and talking about it with our friends and families. This is what it means to be #AbortionPositive.

Not only does the stigma enable anti-abortion legislation to slide under the radar, but abortion stigma and shame directly harms people who seek abortions, too. Abortion stigma is what allows “Crisis Pregnancy Centers” or fake clinics to operate (funded by our tax dollars) is violence — a violence that criminalizes women, trans men, and nonbinary people for their pregnancy outcomes and punishes abortion providers for this essential service.

The fact that politicians can count on an entire culture to shame normal, essential healthcare out of existence is not ok. This ugly stigma can force people to not even see abortion as a real option, even though it's one of the most common and safe medical procedures a person can have. No one should feel shame for their personal healthcare decisions.

Don’t you agree? Join me and URGE and declare your support for abortion today.

In Solidarity,
