Friends,
I’ve spoken before about how I funded the first three years of Voto Latino using my credit card. And while I would never tell anyone else they should do the same, I did it because I felt strongly that our community needed to be politically empowered to help keep ourselves safe.
A decade before Voto Latino launched, California Governor Pete Wilson was stoking fear about immigrants and trying to pass draconian laws barring undocumented people from accessing health care, public schools, and other basic services. It was that kind of rhetoric that inspired us to found Voto Latino.
We’ve come a long way since those days. Ahead of the 2020 election, we registered 600,000 new voters in key states across the country. And in places like Arizona, Georgia, and more, our work paid off -- big time. But even though Donald Trump is no longer in the White House, we can’t rest on our laurels just yet.
As I recently told Ms. Magazine, our next job is to combat online disinformation targeted at the Latino community. In 2016 we had great success with celebrity voices who would speak about Voto Latino and the work we were doing in ads targeted to Latinos.
We need to employ similar strategies today, to ensure the Latino community is getting the facts about COVID-19, vaccines, and the Republican politicians in Washington who are working to obstruct the vital aid so many families have relied on to get through the pandemic. That’s why we’ve joined with our partners at Media Matters to launch a new Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab -- but we need your help to keep up our work!
