On Tuesday, American Oversight launched an investigation into the Arizona Senate’s “forensic audit” of Maricopa County’s 2020 election results.
The audit’s partisan and anti-democratic origins were alarming enough: State Senate Republicans demanded the recount of Maricopa County’s 2.1 million ballots even after an independent audit confirmed the results, which had President Biden receiving more votes — yet another attempt to undermine faith in our elections and to provide cover for the “big lie” that the election was stolen from former President Trump.
But last week, Arizona Senate President Karen Fann announced that the company hired to lead the audit team was a firm called Cyber Ninjas. The founder of Cyber Ninjas, Doug Logan, was a vocal supporter of the “Stop the Steal” canard, and repeatedly circulated lies that the 2020 election was rigged.
The urgent need for transparency into the alarming actions by the state Senate majority led American Oversight to immediately file 19 public records requests with the Arizona legislature, seeking records of Fann’s and other key legislators’ communications about the audit as well as records reflecting any contracts with Cyber Ninjas or other companies hired to provide services relevant to the audit.
