Growing number of NI Councils

voting against Westminster Abortion Law

Precious Life welcome the growing number of Local Councils in Northern Ireland that are voting against Westminster’s plan to force abortion on the province.

Legislation contained in the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Act 2019 will legalise abortion here if a Power-Sharing Executive is not restored in the Stormont Assembly by 21st October.

To date, four Councils have voted in support of motions expressing opposition to the abortion legislation in the Act, and opposition to Westminster's undermining of devolution and democracy in Northern Ireland.

Similar motions will be coming before more Councils in the coming days.

Director of Precious Life Bernadette Smyth said “We thank all our local councillors who are showing their support for protecting unborn babies in Northern Ireland. Our elected representatives uniting to support these motions, clearly shows there is real grassroots opposition to Westminster’s plan to force abortion on Northern Ireland.”

“The voting records of the motions are also exposing those Political Parties that want this undemocratic abortion law forced on Northern Ireland – namely Sinn Fein, Alliance Party, and People Before Profit,” she added.

Bernadette Smyth concluded, “Westminster have ignored the principles of devolution and democracy. They have ignored our local MPs. We have no Assembly at Stormont. So our Local Councils are now our last option to officially show our opposition to Westminster’s abortion law. The Prime Minister and the Secretary of State must take heed of the views of the pro-life majority in Northern Ireland – expressed through our democratically-elected councillors - and do everything within their power to ensure abortion is not forced on Northern Ireland and our unborn babies remain protected after 21st October.”
