Jack,
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, continues to register new refugee arrivals
at the Sudanese-Ethiopian border. Some 800 people crossed from
Ethiopia’s Tigray region into eastern Sudan in just the first few days
of the new year. Since early November, more than 60,000 Ethiopian
refugees have fled to neighboring Sudan.
The latest people arriving describe being caught in the middle of the
conflict and being victims of violence by various armed groups. Refugees
tell of perilous situations including looting of their houses, forceful
recruitment of men and boys, and sexual violence against women and
girls.
Refugees are arriving with little more than the clothes on their backs,
fatigued and in weak condition after days of treacherous journeys to
reach safety. More than 30 percent are estimated to be under 18 and 5
percent over 60 years old.
By acting today, you are standing with these families. You are making a
difference in their lives. Refugees are provided with hot meals and
1,000 tents have been set up by partners to shelter 5,000 people – but
it’s not nearly enough. With your support, we can rush critical
supplies like medicine, clean water, food and tents to children and
families.

UNHCR, Sudan’s Commission for Refugees (COR) and partners are scaling up
their response to meet the needs of refugees. More than 20 humanitarian
partners are on the ground in Um Rakuba camp in Sudan right now and
another six have begun emergency responses in Tunaydbah settlement --
assisting and engaging both refugees and host community members with
shelter, health, food and nutrition services.
The government of Sudan is generously keeping its border open to
refugees, but additional support is needed. It is critical to further
improve water and sanitation conditions in the refugee camps and
reception areas, as well as to ramp up COVID-19 prevention measures,
including isolation facilities.
This emergency response is underfunded and UNHCR needs more support to
be able to reach everyone in need. By acting today, you are joining a
global community committed to ensuring that these children, women and
men find safety and relief. Will you join us and show your support
today?
