John,
At this time last year, the COVID-19 pandemic sent a shockwave through the Department of Veterans Affairs. In just the first six weeks of the pandemic, 7.3 million medical appointments were canceled.
It gets worse.
There's no indication the VA followed up on 2.3 million of those cancelled appointments.
Were those 2.3 million appointments rescheduled or referred out to the community? We don't know.
We can't know.
A massive backlog of appointments, plus concerning reports about lack of community care referrals and unpaid claims are a recipe for crisis at the VA. We've looked at the numbers to determine the effect of cancelling these appointments. Take a look here: |

The VA's next steps will be critical, and we'll be watching to ensure veterans are always put first.
Thank you for your continued dedication to America's veterans.
