Democratic Party leaders are calling for a swift, narrowly-focused House investigation leading to a quick vote on articles of impeachment.
"Quick" and "narrow" are not what we need.
Democratic Party leaders want a quick impeachment resolution so they can shift back to 2020 "kitchen-table topics" of healthcare, jobs, etc. It’s true that the Democratic agenda - including healthcare reform, election security, gun safety, and more - is popular among Americans. But Senate Majority Leader McConnell quietly kills these bills in the Senate by refusing to take them to a vote. No meaningful legislation can happen until we win back both houses of Congress in 2020.
Voters elected a Democratic House to effectively act as a check on Trump and the Republican agenda.
Fast-tracking impeachment, where our MoC’s have real leverage, to get back to dead-on-arrival legislation would be the opposite of effective. House Democrats have an obligation to their voters to carry out their constitutional duty with a broad, thorough, and detailed exploration of all the crimes committed by Trump and all the crimes carried out under his authority by his appointees and cronies.
So long as the House considers impeachment, Democrats control the stage and drive the public narrative. If that continues into 2020, it helps rather than harms campaigns against Trump and campaigns around the policy issues that derive from the Trump/Republican agenda.
If the House votes for articles of impeachment, the trial in the Senate will be under the control of Republicans who will do everything they can to prevent Trump from being convicted. If Trump is acquitted, he will be an even greater danger to democracy. Therefore, the House should not send articles of impeachment to the Senate until there is some likelihood of winning a conviction.
Call Speaker Pelosi ([link removed][UNIQID]) at (415) 556-4862 and tell her:
I strongly urge Speaker Pelosi not to rush the impeachment investigation. Speaker Pelosi has a constitutional duty to carry out a broad, thorough, and detailed investigation of crimes committed by Trump, and crimes carried out under his authority by his appointees and cronies. Congress must take as much time as they need for a comprehensive investigation of all the facts. Republicans will not allow a fair trial in the Senate, so prosecution in the court of public opinion has to be done by the House through comprehensive public hearings.
No articles of impeachment should be sent to the Senate until public pressure ensures that a vote for conviction is possible.
Then, call Rep. Speier and your Senators with this script! Senators will have to deal with impeachment as well, let's get them on record early with their positions.

We’ve argued for impeachment sixteen ways to Sunday in our staff meetings with the Speaker, and helped keep impeachment on the public’s mind nationwide. Congratulations to everyone who’s been in the impeachment fight so far—let’s take a moment to be proud of our share of this accomplishment, then keep fighting.
