Donald Trump had a quick answer when reporters asked him who he saw as the “future” of the Republican Party: Florida governor Ron DeSantis.
We know why DeSantis is Trump's new favorite, even if he might not be on your radar just yet. He's the perfect authoritarian -- and we're ready to end his reign.
DeSantis is launching an all-out war against our democracy. After the 2020 racial justice protests, he launched an anti-protest bill that would give cops the right to drop felony charges on peaceful protesters and hold them in jail without bail. In case his racism wasn't overt enough, the governor included a provision to protect monuments to white supremacy.
Now, he's bringing the GOP's racist voter suppression operation to the battleground state of Florida -- calling on the state legislature to enact new voter restriction laws making it a crime to give voters water and pushing to restrict access to mail-in voting.
We can end DeSantis' GOP career before it even kicks off by defeating him in 2022 -- and luckily, Nikki Fried is up to the challenge.
As the only current Democratic statewide elected official in Florida, Fried knows how to stand against DeSantis -- she's been doing it at every turn for years, from defending the right to protest to protecting the right to vote.
Fried is already hinting at a run for governor, and we know she can win -- the most recent Florida polls show Fried and DeSantis tied among voters. But while Fried has the grit and leadership to defeat DeSantis, she doesn't have the resources to take on a powerful incumbent with ties to Donald Trump's dark money machine.
