President Biden released his infrastructure proposal last week and while there are some key victories in the proposal, one thing is for certain:
It’s not enough. We are in a devastating economic moment, millions of people are unemployed, and we have a crippled healthcare system and a planetary crisis on our hands.
Alexandria has been clear that $10 trillion over 10 years is what’s required to create tens of millions of good union jobs, shore up our healthcare, infrastructure, and housing, and do it in a way that rapidly draws down our carbon emissions.
When this bill arrives in the House, Alexandria is prepared to work with her colleagues to ensure that the $2-2.5 trillion that Biden proposed is just a starting point.
$10 trillion over 10 years may sound like an eye-popping figure, but as the wealthiest nation in the history of the world – and given the scale of the crisis – we can and must go further.
This pandemic has opened the eyes of many to what living in a crisis feels like. The climate crisis is here and will only worsen — but we have the power to minimize the impacts if we act boldly.
This isn’t a progressives versus moderates issue. Even some of the most conservative members of the Democratic caucus, like Joe Manchin, have expressed support for doubling Biden’s proposal.
We know that the pressure from our movement is working. President Biden's proposal includes measures to strengthen unions and focus on communities hit hardest by climate change.
Democrats across the spectrum understand that we need a full economic mobilization that brings together an infrastructure and jobs creation plan to address the climate crisis and rampant income inequality.
We don’t have to send our kids to schools in crumbling buildings, struggle to get Internet access, or drive on broken roads. We can prevent the next crisis and build back our economy better than before.
