Friend,
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month -- and it's the month I hope the Senate votes to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.
This landmark bill was initially passed in 1994, and was reauthorized on a bipartisan basis in 2000, 2005, and 2013 -- but expired in 2019, because of Mitch McConnell's inaction in the Senate. This is the proof of how important it is that we flipped the Senate in 2020, because now we have the opportunity to protect survivors of sexual and domestic violence once again.
The House passed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act last month, and now it's time for the Senate to act: Add your name next to mine to call on the Senate to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act right now.

I was proud to introduce an incredibly important amendment to the new reauthoriation of the Violence Against Women Act last month: My amendment creates a pilot program for victims of domestic violence to apply for independent immigration status, because no one should be forced to stay in an abusive relationship because they fear deportation.
Right now, under current laws, people who travel to the United States with someone on a temporary visa are trapped in that relationship if it turns abusive -- this simple change empowers survivors of domestic abuse to leave their abusers and find their own paths in this country.
It's as simple as that.
But now it's up to the Senate to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and protect families of all kinds, including new immigrants: Add your name next to mine to support survivors and their families and tell the Senate to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act this month in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Thank you,
Dean Phillips
