I’m going to be blunt: a stolen 6-3 conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court with ideologues like Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett puts at risk every substantive issue that progressives like us care about. And the biggest threat the Court poses may be to the very idea of democracy.

That’s why I’ve been working with Take Back the Court – leading the fight to expand the size of the Supreme Court – for the past two years. There’s simply too much on the line to sit back and watch Republicans and their backers continue to rig the Court and enact minority rule.

We didn’t choose this fight. But there is no avoiding it, and our best tool to combat it is a power explicitly given to us in the Constitution that has already been used SEVEN times in our nation’s history: we must expand the Supreme Court.

As it currently stands, a majority of Supreme Court justices were put on the Court by Presidents who received fewer votes than their opponents. This Court supports positions — like repealing the ACA, overturning Roe v. Wade, and stopping common-sense gun reforms — that are opposed by large bipartisan majorities of Americans. Court expansion is the only way to bring the Court back into the American mainstream.
