Essential workers who have been out there every day of this pandemic are still forced to choose between getting paid and staying home when they are sick.
Not only is that bad public health policy, it's a shameful disservice to the workers delivering food for Doordash and Seamless, Uber and Lyft drivers driving doctors and nurses to their jobs, and Instacart shoppers who make it possible for others to stay home.
In the first few weeks of lockdown, I introduced a bill in the City Council to expand paid sick leave to cover gig workers.
12 months on, City Council leadership has failed to bring it for a vote. Workers can’t wait any longer. Join me in calling on the City Council Speaker to pass paid sick leave for gig workers immediately. [[link removed]]
These essential workers have been out there every day, putting themselves at risk to support their families with work that enables others to stay home. But because they are misclassified as independent contractors, the city’s paid sick leave law doesn’t apply to them.
Last May the City Council held a 7 hour hearing on my bill, and others in our Essential Workers Bill of Rights package, listening to frontline workers and to all stakeholders. The Mayor indicated he would sign it. The Speaker said he supported it. The City Council had the power to pass it, and plenty of time.
But here we are, a full pandemic year later, and these 140,000 essential workers still can’t take a paid sick day.

The workers who have been on the front lines this year -- delivering food and packages, transporting people, or caring for them -- shouldn’t have to choose between getting paid and staying home when they’re sick.
