Come and Take It

What to Know: Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Gonzalez—you may recognize the flag. The battle was an important turning point in Texas independence.

The TPPF Take: We remain thankful for the freedoms the founders of Texas fought for.

“The Gonzalez battle flag is an important symbol of the indomitable spirit of Texans,” says TPPF’s Kevin Roberts. “Drawing from the ancient Greeks and the battle of Thermopylae, those few residents of Gonzalez, Texas, had a simple message—you will not take our freedoms. Ever."

You Don’t Say

What to Know: Health insurance through employers is getting too expensive for more and more Americans, the New York Times reports.

The TPPF Take: The Affordable Care Act has proven to be anything but affordable.

“The millions of very poor and elderly in this country have a safety net for their medical care,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “Not so for the middle class, which has been harmed most by the increase in premiums and deductibles in recent years. We need more choice and competition, not less, in the health care industry.”

Moving Out

What to Know: Millennials continue to leave the big cities for more opportunity elsewhere, Census figures show.

The TPPF Take: Those freedom-loving millennials are welcome in Texas.

“The problems that young people face in places like New York are the direct result of government policies,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Big cities’ high taxes, crushing regulations and high cost of living mean that if people want freedom and opportunity, they must seek it elsewhere—in places like Texas.”
