CSA celebrates 30th anniversary “A great resource.” “A life line.” “It helped me to breathe.” “A crucial service provider.” From workers to unions to local agencies, the praises poured in this week as the Community Services Agency (CSA) of the Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO celebrated its 30th anniversary on April 4. Over three decades, CSA has partnered with local unions and agencies to support area workers during strikes, layoffs, government shutdowns and now pandemics. CSA’s Emergency Assistance Fund has helped over 10,000 workers since 1995. Its Building Futures Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Program has upgraded the skills of nearly 2,000 low-income District residents creating a pipeline for them into well paying jobs and union apprenticeships in the building trades. Great Labor Arts Exchange registration opens Registration is now open for the 2021 Online Great Labor Arts Exchange. Dedicated to the life and work of Anne Feeney, this year’s theme is Singing Through the Hard Times. “We’ll be honoring the 2021 Joe Hill Award recipients, Gary Huck and Mike Konopacki, as well as the 2020 recipients Ysaye Barnwell and Steve Jones,” says LHF Executive Director Elise Bryant. “Last year was so much fun and fostered even more strength in our solidarity, despite the fact that we could not be together in person, that we’re going online again this year. You’ll be able to listen, sing-a-long and most importantly, share in the communal joy of being together during these difficult times.”
Remembering Liz Davis Shock waves continued to reverberate through the metro Washington area following the death Sunday night of WTU president Liz Davis. Here are more reactions…
“Liz was always willing to listen to other points of view and never shied away from an unpopular fight if she believed that it would bring justice to the men and women who educate and shape our children’s future.” Jaime Contreras, 32BJ SEIU Vice President
"We have noticed an outpouring of sadness across our DC community. We realized she touched many more lives than we imagined." DC Jobs With Justice
"We could depend upon Liz to be a fierce advocate for teachers and students because she knew our teachers and our students." Mysiki Valentine, Executive Director of MLOV (Many Languages One Voice)
