Team,
For decades, cannabis criminalization laws spurred by the so-called War on Drugs have led to a mass incarceration crisis — tearing apart families and causing immeasurable harm to communities across the country.
Communities of color have been hit especially hard — particularly Black Americans, who are arrested at nearly four times the rate of white Americans for cannabis.
Last year, Ilhan co-sponsored and helped pass a bill that would decriminalize cannabis nationwide and expunge records for cannabis-related offenses. But this historic legislation died in the Republican-controlled Senate.
In just a few short months, circumstances have changed dramatically. New Mexico and New York just legalized cannabis for recreational use last week, and the Minnesota state legislature is expected to bring forward a legalization bill next month.
Now that Democrats have control of the House, Senate, and White House, we must build on this momentum in the states and put the pressure on the federal government to finally legalize cannabis and expunge records for cannabis-related offenses.
Please join Ilhan in calling for cannabis legalization nationwide:
Thank you for being part of this fight.
